DigiDub.
Not just a name, but a rallying cry uttered by Lord DAT who - as Pied Piper
of Hameln did - pulls along in his wake a troop of musicians and DJs :
Makine Madness, L S Diezel, Mashed, etc. This first circle, represented
on this album by Styward, Mudskipper and Dodo, has more than Five Years Of dubwise
activities.
In a way, this collection of remixes draws the
map of DigiDub's connections with other activists. Shimmon & Woolfson and The
Moody Boyz had already joined them on EP's side B. N.U.F. & Egon Zo remind of
their noticcable appearance on Incoming! A passing-through embodied in 16 Millionths
Of An Inch which is still echoeing. The Resonator testifies of their meeting
for a Joint Venture on Ninebar Rec.
Golem : according to Jewish mythology this
harmless figure of clay changed into a bloodthirsty monster. But it only took
the smile of a child to temper its agressiveness... The title of this record
is quite relevant. Musically, dub is as plastic and mouldable as clay. This
"soft machine" can be dangereous if accompanied with the impulse of breaks,
beats, effects, samples and other inserts. But this violence can be attenuated
by the simple fall of dead leaves... Remenber Autumn Leaves by Smart Alec &
Clevor Clogs.
In fact, from new-roots with Sound Proof to techno
sounds via Hedonastik, this album brings out all the aspects of dub. The whole
different versions gathered in this anthology highlight the musical specificity
of DigiDub. Past and future merge. In this digital configuration, dub keeps
its analogical resonances, or so to speak, such numerical processes don't exclude
a deep-rooted memory. The "positive vibes" of the bass line carry an electronic
flavour and are often boosted by frenzied rhythmics.
Drum-n-bass or breakbeat & dub ? This "new
alliance" now rules, as Spaz and Marc Em prove it. Yet, at the beginning dub
was bass then rhythmics. But electronic music has inverted the process: beat
+ groove = techno, drum and bass. What will the next step be ? Beware of
recessive characters... Even more so when this junglistic equation takes on
the dark side of industrial music, it then becomes a post-moderm form of rhythm
and blues...
Urban-music for the 21st century : this could
be a definition of industrial music. This musical trend is keen on any sound
experiments - the same way dub is. DigiDub couldn't ignore it. Transcend asserts
it. 2001 - 2008 on N-Tone - a futuristic and environmental project - was in
a way the experimental continuation of their LSD Zoo sound-system. Mad Max of
sorts, they used part of a gas pipe to generate infra-bass sounds...
Bass-music for industrial people : this approach
is back on the scene. For the show "Scrap Bodies" by the Swedish Su-En Butoh
Dance Company, DigiDub gave birth a stricking and interactive "dub-n-drum" entity
with sounds found in a scrap metal yard. At The Skrot (screwdance) : the
next Golem Of DigiDub will be metallic ! W.T.M...
